The curatorial competition for the UIA-UNESCO World Architecture Congress 2026 in Barcelona is now open
In a joint event, Barcelona City Council, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), the Government of Catalonia, the Higher Council of Spanish Architects' Associations (CSCAE) and the Architects' Association of Catalonia (COAC) launched the competition for the curatorship of the International Union of Architects' (UIA) prestigious Barcelona 2026 World Architecture Congress on Tuesday 27 June.
This event, the most important in the world of architecture, will be held in parallel with World Architecture Capital of the Year, which will also be taking place in Barcelona in the same year. An excellent opportunity to position Barcelona as the epicentre of architectural production and thought, and of contemporary urban design.
Competition terms and conditions
This competition, which will shape the Architecture Congress, aims to rethink and update formats and themes for this type of event. For this reason, the UIA has decided to make the curatorship subject to a two-round international selection process for the first time ever. The goal is to draw conclusions that will generate fresh knowledge and have a genuine impact on the daily lives of people and the planet in the context of the climate crisis.
The team of curators can be a multidisciplinary one, but it must be led by an architect. The members will be chosen by the sponsoring administrations, in conjunction with a committee of recognised experts. Full information and the rules for participation can be found by clicking on the following link.
Barcelona is to play host once again
Barcelona will become the first city ever to host the World Architecture Congress on two occasions – the first was in 1996. The event was a huge success, attended by leading figures in world architecture such as Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Peter Eisenman and more.
New graphic image
The Practica team, based in Barcelona and New York, won the competition to create a graphic identity for the UIA Congress, and their proposal reflects the transformative capacity of architecture to address shared global challenges. This new image will be presented at this year’s Congress in Copenhagen, which will take place from 2 to 6 July.
