World Capital of Architecture
Barcelona 2026, World Capital of Architecture
World Capital of Architecture
Barcelona is a city of architecture for the beauty and uniqueness of many of its buildings, for the way it cares for an architectural heritage that is centuries old, for its continued commitment to offer welcoming, accessible and inclusive public spaces.
Barcelona has been named World Capital of Architecture 2026 by UNESCO-UIA. The architecture, urban planning and landscaping of a diverse, dense city, with limited natural resources and a Mediterranean climate – which is fresh and sunny, but with drought and heat waves – faces challenges of economic, social and environmental sustainability.
Call for proposals for the World Capital of Architecture
As part of Barcelona’s designation as the World Capital of Architecture for 2026 by UNESCO-UIA, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe – Barcelona City Council is launching a call for proposals open to all professional and cultural entities, institutions, and schools that wish to participate.
From 5 September until 15 October, you can submit your proposals and help design a comprehensive programme of exhibitions, tours, workshops, open houses, installations, conferences, and competitions designed for the public, spread across the city’s 10 districts.
International competition of ideas for young architects
Within the framework of Barcelona being named World Capital of Architecture 2026 by UNESCO-UIA, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe – Barcelona City Council is launching this international competition of ideas to remodel 10 permanent party walls of the city, spread across its 10 districts, and it is inviting the entire international community of young architects to get involved. The competition jury will select, for each location, a winning entry from among those presented at that location, as well as a second and third prize.
Architecture Weeks 2024
From May 14 to June 28, Barcelona celebrated the Architecture Weeks, seven weeks of an extensive programme aimed at strengthening the link between architecture and citizenship. Exhibitions, contests, prizes, gatherings, guided tours, parties and much more, for all audiences, across all districts of the city.
Promoted by Barcelona City Council and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, it is an initiative which is open to the presence and collaboration of entities dedicated to the dissemination of Barcelona’s architecture and beyond, in addition to a representation of different social, cultural and artistic disciplines.
