Gas heaters prohibited on bar and restaurant terraces from 1 January

The definitive ban on the use of combustion heaters is part of the by-law on terraces approved in 2018, which established the elimination of these types of heaters on city terraces from January 2025 due to the CO₂ they emit. Bars and restaurants can use electric heaters with a power potential of 150 W/m² between 1 November and 30 April.

The installation of gas heaters from 1 January 2025 may result in fines and the relevant specifications for permits to install gas combustion heaters set out in the concessionary decrees will be deemed as revoked when the regulations in the by-law on terraces come into force.

Since the by-law on terraces was approved in 2018, Barcelona City Council has been working the bars and restaurants in the city so that they gradually phase out these types of gas heaters and replace them with alternatives.
