In Barcelona we’re continuing to improve the quality of the lights on the city’s main streets, adding new routes and making it possible for hundreds of streets and squares to dress up in Christmas finery.
This year, don’t miss your last chance to see the Christmas lights designed by Estudi Antoni Arola at Plaça de Catalunya, Carrer d’Aragó and Gran Via. If you go to Passeig de Sant Joan, you can still enjoy the comic-themed lights designed by Brosmind, which were first introduced last year. Furthermore, the unique buildings to be lit up will be joined by 22 Christmas light structures placed throughout the city’s ten districts.
The City Council has decided to keep the Christmas lights on for longer, increasing the number of hours from 243.5 to 322 hours, with an extra day. Having listened to the city’s shops and restaurants, the aim is to encourage people to celebrate Christmas and spend locally. The Christmas lights will be on between 28 November and 6 January at the following times:
- Sunday to Thursday: 5.30 pm to 1 am
- Friday and Saturday: 5.30 pm to 2 am
- Eve of public holidays (25 and 31 December and 5 January): from 5.30 pm to 2 am
Hundreds of streets and squares will be decked out thanks to the partnership between Barcelona City Council and the city’s shops.
Routes highlighting iconic establishments
This year’s Christmas season will also see the introduction of new routes highlighting iconic establishments in the Gòtic and El Raval neighbourhoods. The establishments will feature special lighting showcasing the uniqueness of their products as well as of the establishments themselves and their architectural heritage.
The route through the Gòtic neighbourhood will include the Cafè de l’Òpera, La Colmena, the Brunells patisserie, Torrons La Campana, El Xampanyet and Casa Gispert. And the Raval neighbourhood route will include Casa Almirall, Granja Viader, the Resolís and Marsella bars, the London Bar and La Confiteria. You can also admire the lit-up façades of some of the city’s hotels in a new route created in partnership with the Barcelona Hotel Guild.
