Disseny Hub Barcelona. Space A. Entry from the junction with C/ Badajoz
The “conquest of space” concept has taken a radical turn since the launch, in 1957, of the Russian satellite Sputnik. That first orbital adventure, a technological challenge which ignited the Cold War Space Race, has become a private business over the decades, despite the Outer Space Treaty governing international space law, which has so far put over five thousand satellites into orbit. A compact network of objects flying over our heads. Call out aims to invite reflection on the impact on outer space of this relentless commercial invasion and on the dangers that the rising number of these devices represent, especially when they become space junk. The work traces the satellites in real time as they fly above the local site and transform this information into numerous light patterns divided into five scenes, such as the explosion of light that warns of the danger of collision when two satellites cross paths.

The new media artists Abel Korinsky (Berlin, 1985) and Orhan “aib” Kavrakoglu (Istanbul, 1984) decided to work together to create immersive audio-visual installations in this joint effort. Their first collaboration resulted in Yakamoz, in Istanbul, in 2019. They subsequently continued to present other collaborative works, with reflection on outer space as their central theme, in Istanbul, Bulgaria, Germany, Slovakia and Spain, among other places. On an individual level, they were selected to create items for various projects and contexts, such as the Paradise Art Lab in Incheon (2022), Art & Tech Days in Košice (2021), the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels (2019), the MMCA in Seoul (2019), the Kestnergesellschaft in Hannover (2017), the Türkiye Innovasyon Haftasi in Istanbul (2017), the Experimenta Biennial in Melbourne (2014) and the Ars Electronica Center in Linz (2012).
