Popular Arab music and dance (chaabi and jabalia) – Morocco

One of the activities on the Rambla del Raval stage during La Mercè, being held in conjunction with the European Institute of the Mediterranean, is the concert by Salam Grup, a popular Arab music and dance group that originated from jam sessions between Moroccan and Catalan musicians.

This group offers a wide variety of Arab musical styles, like chaabi (popular music at festivals and celebrations all over the Arab world), jabalia (traditional music from the mountains regions of Rif in Morocco), rai (modern Arab music from Algeria) and oriental (coming from traditional Egyptian music). 

This time, Salam Grup's live performance will particularly focus on the dakka genre, the lively music that is essential entertainment at parties and weddings in Morocco.
