Renovation of the Jardins de la Reina Victòria Eugènia

The district council for L’Eixample is to execute a project to revamp the Jardins de la Reina Victòria Eugènia, located in the central section of the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, between Rambla de Catalunya and Passeig de Gràcia. Also known as the Jardí de les Quatre Copes, the gardens were part of a planning project which now dates back a hundred years exactly and which conceived four urban gardens distributed evenly in L’Eixample.

The project which has now been initially approved seeks to recover the essence of these original noucentista gardens as far as possible, blurred over time with the elimination of water elements in the 1980s and the addition of new infrastructures such as the entrance to the metro and different sculptures.

The project seeks to broaden and improve the pedestrian crossing turning into Passeig de Gràcia, which handles a significant volume of pedestrians, and reposition the sculpture Monument al Llibre. The lateral parterres on the side of Passeig de Gràcia will be extended with a strip of different granite paving and new parterres with vegetation at the four points where they are currently interrupted (from former pedestrian crossings).

The gardens will be greened up with Platanus x hispánica trees, complementing the current bushes and a set of species organised concentrically to the western parterre.

Streetlights will be replaced with new posts with lights at two heights (for the road and for the central pedestrian space), located in the longitudinal parterre. A new column will also be added next to Rambla de Catalunya, along with two columns next to Passeig de Gràcia.

Gardens with heritage value

The work will respect the works of urban art which have been added to the Jardins de la Reina Victòria Eugènia over the years. Notable works include the monument A Francesc Soler i Rovirosa (1930), the reconstruction of the statue A Joan Güell i Ferrer, both by Frederic Marès, and Monument al Llibre, by Joan Brossa (1994).

The benches and the quatre copes (sculptures of urns) will be restored, given their particular importance and heritage value.

The project also includes a wi-fi point, the connection of lighting and watering systems to the municipal network and the continuity of the Bicing station.

Work will begin at the end of July and is due to last five and a half months, with a budget of 891,852,42 euros (VAT included).
