More pedestrian space as Ronda Universitat gets transformed
Ronda de la Universitat is about to become a street with less traffic and more pedestrian space, responding to a long-standing demand from local residents. The process will see the pavements widened, addressing the current disproportionality whereby two thirds of the space in the street is used by traffic and just a third by pedestrians.
Work to reconfigure the Ronda de la Universitat gets under way on Sunday 22 November, gaining 1,730 square metres of space for journeys on foot and giving the network of commerce a boost. The work involves:
- Widening of pavements. Pavements on the side nearest the mountains will be widened from 5 to 8 metres, and on the side nearest the sea from 5 to in the section between Rambla de Catalunya and Carrer de Balmes, and from 5 to 7.6 metres in the section between Carrer de Balmes and Plaça de la Universitat.
- Reduction in traffic lanes. The two bus lanes will remain, with traffic lanes to be cut from 4 to 2 lanes.
- Installation of 66 plant tubs with trees, previously inexistent along the whole street.
The work will conclude in March 2021 and cost 350,000 euros.
