Testing begins with a scale model of the future trunk sewer for Av. Diagonal

The model of the water infrastructure will help gauge the drainage capacity and improve the construction project. The update to the sewer beneath Av. Diagonal will be vital to adapt it to the effects of climate change: the maximum drainage volume will be doubled between Pg. Sant Jona and Pl. Francesc Macià during intense episodes of rain.

The 1:25 scale model of the trunk sewer beneath Av. Diagonal reproduces two of the sections.

The testing will help optimise the construction resources for the project, reduce the environmental impact and study its drainage capacity.

The model has been developed in collaboration with the GITS research group from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the engineering company Ingeniería Gestión y Consultoría Barcelona (IGC).

The sewer beneath Av. Diagonal: a key infrastructure against climate change

The infrastructure will double the drainage capacity for rainwater in Av. Diagonal between Pg. Sant Joan and Pl. Francesc Macià. During periods of intense rain, the maximum flow volume will rise to 143 m3 instead of the current 70 m3.

The infrastructure, with no construction date established yet, is one of the priority projects in the Master Plan for the Comprehensive Sanitation of Barcelona, the city’s first sewerage and drainage plan.

The plan also includes the drainage system in C/ Vila i Vilà and the rainwater collector tank in Av. Prim.
