Rosario Endrinal, a new residential support facility for homeless women
The Rosario Endrinal Home is aimed at single adult women who have been homeless for a long time. Stays at the facility are indefinite and not conditioned by the social support process. The new home, located on a site leased by the City Council in the Sarrià neighbourhood, has 10 rooms and is managed by the Associació Assís through an arrangement with the Municipal Institute for Social Services.A pioneering project in the Spanish state and one of only a few in Europe, the new facility is based on Communal Housing First methodology, where all the homes in the same building have communal services. As a model of collaborative housing, the people who live in the building are actively involved in its management and daily life.
The Rosario Endrinal Home has 10 fully equipped individual rooms with their own kitchen. The building has communal areas, collective management and social and educational support. The women, who can stay there indefinitely, will be able to live there with their pets.
The name of the centre was chosen in memory of and in tribute to the homeless woman Rosario Endrinal, who was murdered when she was set alight in an indoor cashpoint in the district of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
Tackling women’s homelessness
The new facility responds to the municipal strategy of preventing and combating homelessness among women and comes in addition to the residential facilities of La Llavor and La Violeta, the Ali Bei temporary accommodation for single-parent families and the Primary Reception Centre in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
In collaboration with the Support Network for the Homeless (XAPSLL), Barcelona has a total of 2,913 residential places in shelters for the homeless.
