Emergency response activated in the city

An accident between two coaches this afternoon at Av. Diagonal, 361, caused 51 injured, 4 of them in a critical condition. Several City Police units are on the scene, along with ten units from the Barcelona Fire Service and twenty ambulances.

One of the coaches was carrying students from an Italian school, while the other was carrying passengers of different nationalities from a cruise ship in Port de Barcelona.

Emergency services have attended to 63 people in all, 51 of whom have sustained injuries of different types.

Four people have critically injured and have been taken to the hospitals of Vall d’Hebron, Sant Pau, Clínic and Mar. Of these, one is a minor and another is a pedestrian who was run over by one of the coaches.

Three others have been taken to hospital in a less serious condition to the hospitals of Sant Joan de Déu, Mar and Sant Pau. There are also 44 people with light injuries, who have been taken to various hospitals.

The City Council has activated the Barcelona Social Emergency and Urgent Care Centre (CUESB) to provide psychological care and logistical support for the accident victims.

Response by emergency services

Units from the Barcelona City Police, the Emergency Medical Service and the Barcelona Fire Service are all on the scene. The Central Traffic Witness Unit from the City Police are investigating the causes of the accident. Both drivers tested negative in breathalyser and drug-driving tests.
