Various sections of the L5 metro line to be completely renewed

A total of 3 kilometres of the L5 metro line will be renewed in 2022, helping to reduce incidents, resolve issues with vibrations affecting nearby buildings, make journeys more comfortable and improve the frequency of trains in the near future. Work will be carried out at Easter and in the summer, also offering the opportunity to remove the material containing asbestos detected at the Maragall station.

The project involves an investment of 15 million euros and will be carried out in two stages:

During the first cut in services, lasting ten days at Easter, from 9 to 18 April, two stretches of 300 metres will be completed overhauled: between Verdaguer and Sagrada Família, and between La Sagrera and Congrés, even though the section affected will be between the stations of Vilapicina and Diagonal. New track machinery will also be installed at the entrance to La Sagrera so that this important interchange can keep operating during the work in the summer, which will be carried out over a longer period. The project will also open up a shaft for getting material to and from Sagrada Família and removing the material with asbestos from Maragall.

The work in the summer will last from 9 July to 10 September and involve a complete renewal of the track from Congrés to Horta, affecting mobility between the stations of La Sagrera and Horta / El Carmel. In all, three kilometres of double tracks (12,000 metres of rails) will be dismantled and renewed on a concrete base with anti-vibration features.

Strengthening the metro network

In an effort to minimise the impact for users, the cuts in service will be in place for periods when half the days are working days and half are public holidays, with other metro alternatives continuing to provide the most efficient option. During the work at Easter, services on the rest of the lines on the network will be bolstered by 20%, and in summer, by between 8% and 15%. Extra services will also be in place on the H8 (Diagonal/La Sagrera) bus line and the D50 (Virrei Amat/Verdaguer), which cover routes that complement the affected metro sections. A shuttle bus service with 30 articulated vehicles will also operate during the work at Easter, while between 19 and 22 vehicles will be laid on during the work in summer.

An information campaign gets under way at the affected stations and points of interest from 28 March. On that same date, the Vull Anar journey planner will make information on the disruptions to service available to its users. All travel alternatives are accessible for people with reduced mobility.
