The award ceremony for the 25 November Prize, which Barcelona City Council holds each year to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, will take place following the performance of Pamela Palenciano’s theatrical monologue “No solo duelen los golpes” [Not only the blows hurt].

This emotive piece provides a very fitting context for the theme of the 16th 25 November Prize, which this year focuses on the age-old, structural and universal phenomenon of gender violence, which takes place both within couple relationships and in spaces where women live out their everyday lives.

The performance piece “No solo duelen los golpes” invites us to reflect on the dominant, hegemonic, traditional models of masculinity and the effects and consequences they have on people, particularly on women. And at the same time, it invites us to look at the impact of these models on the socialisation of masculine norms, and the limits and prejudices they impose on people.

This is an autobiographical piece in which the feminist activist and communicator recounts her experience of her first romantic relationship which turned violent. Through an autobiographical monologue, told with biting humour that goes from irony to drama and involves audience interaction, the actress connects with the universal story of gender violence and the construction of stereotypes that result in the inequality that enables one person to exercise violence over another person at all levels.

The 2021 25 November Prize will be awarded by the Mayor, Ada Colau Ballano, accompanied by the deputy mayor for Social Rights, Global Justice, Feminism and LGBTI Affairs, Laura Pérez Castaño.
