Montserrat Roig Awards for Journalism and Social Communication 2023 awarded

The 31st edition saw awards go to, in the social journalism category, the report “Sense Ficció - Allà on fa més mal”, by Televisió de Catalunya - CCMA, offering the accounts of victims of the only case recognised in Catalonia as substitutionary violence, and in the social communication category, the campaign “Les mil cares de l’esclerosi múltiple”, by the Fundació Privada per la Lluita contra l’Esclerosi Múltiple. The special jury award went to the journalist Elisenda Colell, in recognition of her social commitment with chronicles and her thorough and incisive perspective on social topics.

The 31st Montserrat Roig Awards for Journalism and Social Communication awarded 45,000 euros between the 7 winning projects, out of 39 put forward.

With the aim of promoting and incentivising quality information, focusing on better treatment of social issues in the media, this year’s awards attracted 17 candidacies in the social journalism category, 13 in the social communication category and 9 in the investigative journalism category.

The winners of the Montserrat Roig Awards 2023 in the social journalism category were:

  • 1st prize: Sense Ficció – Allà on fa més mal, by Televisió de Catalunya – CCMA, based on the accounts of four mothers who lost their children in the hands of their fathers. There has only been one recognised case in Catalonia as such, of Leo, a two-year-old murdered by his father in 2021.
  • 2nd prize: Així és un geriàtric per dins: les famílies no saben ni la meitat del que hi passa, by Mònica Bernabé, published in the newspaper Ara. The article highlights the lack of resources in homes for the elderly and how the regulations from 2014 have become outdated.

The winners in the social communication category were:

  • 1st prize: Les mil cares de l’esclerosi múltiple, by Fundació Privada per la Lluita contra l’Esclerosi Múltiple.
  • 2nd prize: Edició especial del TN Vespre Cap de Setmana presentat per persones amb discapacitat intel·lectual, broadcast by Televisió de Catalunya – CCMA. This was a new programme, edited and presented for the first time ever by people with intellectual disabilities.

The two winners in the promotion of investigative journalism in social rights and social action category, which should be developed in the coming months, were:

  • Feminicides: l’altra cara de la violència, by Isabel Muntané Rodríguez, a research project to define psychological and sociocultural patterns that lead to men murdering their partners.
  • Vides truncades pel CIE. Històries dins i fora del Centre d’Internament d’Estrangers de Barcelona, by Josep Tomàs París Castro. The project aims to put names and faces to people who spend time in a foreigner internment centre.

The first prizes are worth 7,000 euros, the second prizes are worth 3,000 euros, the prize for projects promoting investigative journalism is worth 10,000 euros and the special jury award, which this went to the journalist Elisenda Colell, is worth 5,000 euros.

The jury for the Montserrat Roig Awards is made up of 18 people with recognised careers in communication and social rights.
