The addition of a new stretch of bicycle lane on C. Mallorca increases the Sagrera-Sants cycling space
The new cycle lane on C. Mallorca between C. Clot and C. Cartagena, will be one-way, segregated, and located on the ‘sea’ side of the road. It will link the cycle lane from C. Clot with the stretch of the cycle lane on C. Mallorca between C. Cartagena and Av. Diagonal.
This section will extend the horizontal axis that when completed will cross the city in the Llobregat direction, linking the neighbourhoods of Sant Andreu, Sagrera, Sagrada Familia and others within the Eixample district with Sants station, running through the entire Cerdà section of the city.
The section of the street that comes after the cycle lane will have two traffic lanes plus a bus lane on the ‘mountain’ side, and a cycle lane on the ‘sea’ side, all running in the Llobregat direction. The service lane will be removed. There will be no changes to the width of the existing lanes on C. Mallorca.
The work is scheduled to be carried between 30 January and 17 March 2023, in several stages:
Stage 1.- Civil works. From 30 January to 24 February 2023, during standard working hours from 9.30 am.
This stage will see work carried out on the replacement of sewer grates and drains, the creation of traffic light channels and the relocation of elements from the service lane on adjacent streets.
The works will not affect the traffic lanes. Signage will inform of the disruption to the service lane eight days in advance, both on C. Mallorca and on the adjacent streets.
Stage 2.- Pavements. On the weekend of 25 and 26 February 2023, work will be in progress between 8 am and 8 pm, with work involving noise beginning at 9 am on Sunday.
This stage will involve fine milling and the laying of asphalt, on what is to be the future cycle lane only. No resurfacing will be carried out at junctions. Resurfacing work will begin the C. Clot crossroads, in the Llobregat direction.
Once the surface has been laid, road markings will be painted to separate the cycle lane. Over the following days it will be closed to bicycles, and signage stating that the cycle lane is out of service will be in place.
Stage 3.- Cycle lane separators and signage. From 27 February to 17 March 2023, work will be carried out during standard working hours from 9.30 am until the end of the day.
Work will be carried out to install cycle lane separators, paint road markings, logos and red surface markings at crossroads.
Work on the placement of cycle lane separators will be carried out with support from a ‘screening’ vehicle, and lines of cones will demarcate the works area. These works will be carried out during off-peak hours, between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm. Outside this timetable traffic circulation will function as usual.
The task of painting the crossroads and lane markings will be carried out at night, between 10.30 pm and 5.30 am. No work will be done on Friday – Saturday night, or Saturday – Sunday night.
