Let’s eat artichokes!

Barcelona is the world sustainable food capital this year, an event which extends beyond the Catalan capital and involves the metropolitan area. Within this context, El Prat and Sant Boi de Llobregat are running the campaign ‘Let’s eat artichokes’ to make their case as world capitals for this vegetable and promote the production and consumption of artichokes from the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park.

The campaign will run until early May and forms part of a series of activities in different metropolitan municipalities, in line with the city’s food capital status and the promotion of healthy and fair sustainable food models.

El Prat and Sant Boi de Llobregat are also backing the promotion and protection of the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park as a major green infrastructure and the main area for agricultural production in the metropolitan area. The goal here is to preserve its biodiversity and crops. In this sense, the campaign seeks stronger metropolitan leadership relating to the area, also taking into account how the pandemic has highlighted the need to promote more sustainable city models, protect large green metropolitan infrastructures and guarantee the supply of local produce.

Land belonging to the two municipalities and forming part of the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park accounts for 248 hectares of artichoke cultivation, according to the Catalan government’s Ministry of Agriculture. This equates to an annual production of 2,480 tonnes of artichokes.
