The Barcelona Institute for Audiovisual Techniques and Shows starts life
The new centre is set to open for the 2023-2024 academic year and will offer regulated vocational training, thanks to a partnership between the Barcelona Education Consortium and the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya. The institute will offer a full range of professional teaching for the different disciplines in the performing arts, such as lighting, sound, stage equipment, imaging, production, direction and stage management, as well as an intermediate vocational training cycle and the baccalaureates allowing for study paths in this sphere.
The range of courses for the 2023-2024 academic year includes six artistic degrees:
- Lighting technology, newly created
- Sound for performing arts, newly created
- Stage machinery, newly created
- Production of audiovisual projects and shows
- Direction of audiovisuals and shows
- Theatre performance techniques
The range of courses also includes an intermediate vocational cycle in Video, Disc Jockeying and Sound, plus baccalaureates in the artistic and stage field and in technology. A professionalisation certificate will also be offered.
The main site for the Barcelona Institute for Audiovisual Techniques and Shows will be based in the modules of the current Escola Auditori, with 1,900 square metres of surface space, along with spaces from the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (TNC), with 450 square metres, and the Orfeó Martinenc, where the main practical hall will be located, plus other complementary spaces totalling an area of 550 square metres. In all, the institute will have the use of 2,900 square metres of facilities. The design and conditioning of these will be the responsibility of the Barcelona Education Consortium, at a cost of 400,000 euros.
Collaboration with the sector
The agreement with the TNC generates the possibility of exchanging information between the theatre and staff at the centre, also allowing students to use technical and technological material not being used at the facility. In addition, there will be help for students and teaching staff to attend rehearsals and teaching meetings with professionals for a first-hand look at how artistic activity is developed, and the work of professionals in the performing arts. Students will also be offered placements to complement training in some subjects.
The project is intended to serve leading venues in the audiovisual and stage sector in the city and establish synergies with the likes of the Orfeó Martinenc, the Sala Razzmatazz, Barcelona Music Lab, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Sala Beckett, the Teatre Lliure, L’Auditori, the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Mercat de les Flors, the Primavera Sound, CIATRE (Catalan Association of Professional Theatre Companies) and ADETCA (Catalan Association of Theatre Companies).
