City of Barcelona Awards: 75 years recognising excellence in culture and science

The awards reflect the city’s commitment to fostering creativity and research and are established as an essential platform for giving visibility to projects and initiatives that enrich the cultural, scientific and educational network.

This year’s award categories have been increased from 14 to 16 with the addition of Digital Cultural category and another for Design and Fashion. The Education category has been changed to Culture and Education, the goal being to broaden its scope and recognise projects with a social and cultural impact beyond the academic sphere.

The City of Barcelona Awards 2024 went to:

In the sphere of arts and thought, the awards went to Xavier Pla in the category for Essays, Humanities and History; Gabriela Wiener in Spanish Literature; Cristina Masanés in Catalan Literature, and Xavier Pàmies in Translation in Catalan.

In the disciplines of design and architecture, the award for Architecture and Urban Planning went to Carlos Ferrater, Lucía Ferrater and Jesús Coll, while the award for Design and Fashion went to Teresa Helbig.

The City of Barcelona Awards 2024 also recognised Maria Rodríguez Soto and the Col·lectiu Taller Estampa in the Audiovisual and Digital Culture categories respectively.

In the realm of popular culture and education, the Coordinadora de Colles Geganteres de Barcelona received the award in Popular and Community Cultures, while Marta Galán Sala took the award in Culture and Education. In Music, Visual Arts and Performing Arts, the awards went to Tarta Relena, Jordi Colomer and Victoria Szpunberg, respectively.

Finally, in the scientific sphere, the awards went to Jose Antonio Garrido and Kostas Kostarelo in Experimental Sciences and Technology; Laura Soucek in Life Sciences, and Kim van Daalen and Rachel Lowe in Environmental and Earth Sciences.

The jury was made up of individuals of renowned prestige in each category, proposed by the Barcelona Culture Council and the Science Advisory Council.
