The new school year gets under way at the city’s 105 municipal nurseries

The new academic year gets under way at the city’s municipal nursery schools on Friday, 8 September, with the network set to welcome 8,891 infants up to the age of three. The city has four new facilities: two to house the two new centres of Can Rosés (Les Corts) and Teixonera (Horta-Guinardó), and two to enlarge and transfer the existing centres of Torre del Rellotge (Nou Barris) and Pere Calafell (Sant Martí).

In Barcelona, one in four infants up to the age of 3 are being schooled with one of the 4,765 municipal nursery school places, 300 more than the previous. During the pre-enrolment process there were 8,241 applications in all, 715 more than the previous year, with the network able to cover 55% of the demand.

The calendar for the four nursery schools with new buildings differs slightly to the rest:

  • The schools of Can Rosés, Teixonera and Torre del Rellotge will start the academic year in their new premises on 18 September.
  • At the Pere Calafell school, infants continuing from the Esquitx school will start on 8 September, while newly enrolled children will start on 2 October at another site, a temporary measure owing to a delay in completing building work.

Maintenance and improvements during the summer

The summer break was used to carry out 41 improvement projects at 34 municipal nursery schools, with an overall investment of nearly 850,000 euros. The work focused on temperature control, playground maintenance, elements to provide shade and the renewal of paving and awnings etc.

Four centres with diverse opening hours

The service with different hours continues to be offered at the nursery schools of Caspolino (Gràcia), Germanetes (Eixample), Xiroi (Les Corts) and Petit Princep (Sant Martí. This allows families to enrol infants for shorter hours, for mornings only from 9 am to 1pm, or for afternoons only from 3 pm to 7 pm, or all day from 8 am to 5 pm.
