Road closures and parking restrictions for New Year’s Eve celebration on Maria Cristina
Barcelona will ring in the New Year with a spectacular celebration on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, during which roads in the surrounding area will be closed to traffic. Parking will be prohibited, including motorcycles on the pavement, from midnight on 31 December (Saturday night) until 2 am on 1 January.To enable assembly of the installations, parking will be prohibited from midnight on 31 December (Saturday night) until 2 am on 1 January on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina (on both sides of the road, including motorcycles on the pavements and Plaça d’Espanya), Avinguda de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia (on the sea side, between Maria Cristina and Mies van der Rohe), Avinguda de Rius i Taulet (on both sides, between Maria Cristina and Carrer de la Guàrdia Urbana), Plaça de Carles Buïgas (road 6025, the area around Pavelló d’Itàlia and the pavement outside the Mies van der Rohe Foundation), Carrer de la Guàrdia Urbana (in front of Plaça de les Viudes and the motorcycle parking on the Besòs side), Avinguda dels Montanyans (on the Besòs side, behind the Palau Nacional and staggered parking on the Llobregat side) and the Palau Nacional viewpoint (on both sides).
From 7 pm on 31 December, or when crowd levels make it necessary, Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, Avinguda de Rius i Taulet and Avinguda de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia (between Carrer de la Guàrdia Urbana and Carrer de Mèxic) will be closed to traffic. Plaça Espanya will be closed to traffic when crowd levels make it necessary, and in any case before 9 pm. At that time, the appropriate traffic diversions will come into effect on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Avinguda del Paral·lel and Plaça Espanya itself (Carrer de la Creu Coberta towards Gran Via in the direction of Llobregat), which may also be completely closed along the Hostafrancs section if crowd levels make this advisable. All traffic entering the city along Gran Via, including traffic heading in the direction of Plaça Espanya, will be diverted through the tunnel under the square.
Between 9 pm and 10 pm, a third area around Plaça Espanya will also be completely closed to traffic. Traffic from Carrer de Tarragona will be diverted along Carrer del Consell de Cent to Carrer de la Creu Coberta; traffic from Carrer de la Creu Coberta to Plaça Espanya will be diverted along Carrer del Moianès and Carrer de Sant Roc; traffic from Carrer de la Diputació will be diverted along Carrer de Vilamarí and Carrer del Príncep Jordi; and traffic from the Eixample side of Gran Via will be diverted to Carrer de Vilamarí.
