Work gets under way on the new Mercat de Montserrat
Building work is now under way for the new Mercat de Montserrat, in the district of Nou Barris. The new market will have a built surface area of 10,045 square metres, distributed into two floors, a basement, a ground floor and an intermediate floor. The budget for the project is 14 million euros, with work expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2024.The block where the Mercat de Montserrat stands has parking areas, the market’s loading bay and small spaces used as children’s play areas. The idea is for the new building to go where the car parking us currently located, meaning the market can continue to function while the new one is created.
The ground floor will be on two levels, the upper section accessed from the square and housing the market, the lower section housing a supermarket and accessed from Carrer Aigauablava. The building will have two floors below ground, providing storage for stallholders, a logistics zone and parking.
The new building will be made with stone materials and concrete for both inside and exterior sections in contact with the terrain, reducing maintenance tasks for the building significantly at these points.
The upper sections will be made with light and transparent materials, with the rooftop visible from many points in the surrounding area and featuring vegetation.
