Over half of food stalls at markets are Green Commerce
In all, 619 establishments have joined the Green Commerce initiative, representing 52% of the city’s 1,105 market stalls selling food. These businesses guarantee a larger volume of local organic produce, sourced directly from farmers or the fish auction and fostering sustainable food. The Green Commerce initiative was launched within the context of the programme for the Barcelona World Sustainable Food Capital 2021. It represents a qualitative leap in the volume of local organic food from small producers, farmers and the fish auction consumed in Barcelona, as well as the fact that people can access these products much more easily.
The city’s 38 food markets all have establishments forming part of the initiative, identified with posters and other visual elements to boost visibility.
The markets with the most participating stalls are those in Sarrià, Bon Pastor, Les Corts, Sant Andreu, Sants and Horta. By sector, there are 291 establishments offering meat products, 158 fish stalls, 120 fruit and veg stalls, 29 stalls selling beans and pulses, 11 selling herbal and health foods, 6 grocers and 4 specialist stalls.
Defined and driven in collaboration with food retail guilds, the programme also offers specialist support for participating businesses. This ranges from information services to guidance and training to help strengthen trade, plus help with customer loyalty towards this type of produce and stronger communication channels.
