Revamp to the Boqueria to retain the market’s unique character
The goal is to guarantee its essence as a market selling fresh produce for people in the Raval neighbourhood, maintaining the singularity of the facility and its economic feasibility. The revamp will mainly centre on the central fish section, the façade in Pl. Gardunya and the ceiling. The work should get under way in 2025 and be completed in 2027, at the same time the work on La Rambla is completed. The expected investment will be around 12 million euros.
The idea is for the market to achieve a balance between fresh produce aimed at the people of Barcelona and the option of selling some ready-made products.
The municipal by-law on markets and the internal regulations of the Boqueria will be amended so that the renovation project can be carried out, and a dialogue with stallholders at the market will be started. All the current establishments will have the opportunity to stay in the Boqueria.
The Boqueria is the municipal market that gets the most visitors every year, with over 23 million in 2023. The market and Pl. Gardunya are one of the city’s sixteen high influx areas (EGA), regulated by tourism by-laws.
