The Barcelona Institute of Municipal Markets launched its Comerç Verd project in 2021 to increase the visibility of locally produced short-circuit quality organic produce around the city’s municipal markets.

There are currently 481 municipal market stalls on the programme: 90 fruit and vegetable stalls, 109 fish stalls, 250 butcher’s, 24 stalls selling pulses and 8 selling herbs and spices. A campaign will run from 17 February to 19 March to give visibility to the Comerç Verd label, with draws for rural getaways for up to 4 people in agricultural accommodation in Catalonia and guided tours of local cultivation areas with tastings of quality produce. Those interested will have to fill in an entry slip and leave it in the prize-draw box at each market.

The initiative has facilitated access for citizens to local organic produce from small producers, famers and the fish market. A change in people’s habits has been detected since the project was launched, and besides promoting healthy food the initiative helps reduce the carbon footprint, combat the climate emergency and ensure the feasibility of local and sustainable agriculture and livestock.
