Fifty million euros in investment to speed up the energy transition in the city
The Barcelona Sustainable Energy Mechanism is being set up with the goal of increasing renewable energy generation in the city by 66%. Fifty million euros will be invested to make this possible, the goal being to attract private funds to elevate that figure to 166 million and fund energy renovation projects and the installation of solar panelling. The agreement with the municipal groups Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya and Junts per Catalunya will enable the Sustainable Energy Mechanism (MES Barcelona) to be set up. MES will be another tool for speeding up the change of energy model and meeting the goals set out in the Climate Emergency Declaration, the Sustainable Development Goals for the 2030 Agenda and the Climate Plan.
The creation of MES Barcelona fosters a new investment model requiring co-funding from building owners, and where that investment is recovered thanks to the energy savings achieved by the renovation plus the sale of surplus energy generated by the solar panelling installed.
Private initiatives will be promoted in the city to improve the energy efficiency of buildings with high power consumptions, such as industrial units, hotels, hospitals, sports centres, blocks of flats, elements in public highways and energy innovation projects.
Cutting energy waste in old housing
Blocks of flats in Barcelona have an average age of sixty, and most perform poorly in terms of energy efficiency. This new tool from the City Council offers a chance to improve the thermal insulation of these buildings and make use of roof terraces to generate energy with solar panelling, at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
