All traffic lights now using LED optics
The use of LED technology in traffic lights in the city will cut energy consumption by 85%, saving 18 tonnes in CO₂ emissions and 65,000 euros in monthly power bills. The measure forms part of the Climate Plan, moving towards the decarbonisation of the city. The city currently has 39,900 traffic lights at 1,803 junctions, some 23% more than in 2001, when the process began to progressively switch from incandescent lighting to LED technology.
This change has allowed for a reduction in daily consumption, dropping from 46.000 kWh to 10,000 kWh, offering an example of how the energy transition in the city can combine environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and the growth of the infrastructure at the same time.
