New service offering pet cremation and burial of ashes
Cementiris de Barcelona are launching a new public service providing pet cremation and the burial of ashes which respects the dignity of the animal and the grief of its owners and family. The service will be launched at the end of 2024 through an investment of 1.1 million euros and is expected to conduct some seven thousand pet cremations a year in its first few years.Managed by Cementiris de Barcelona, the service will:
- Handle the loss of pets through a comprehensive service from death to the animal’s final resting place, moving from a purely functional model to a more humane and sensitive one under public management criteria.
- Once the animal is cremated, its ashes can be given to the owners or deposited at the cemetery.
- Offer families a space to bid farewell to the animal they have lived with.
Cementiris de Barcelona carried out a feasibility study for the service which highlighted the unfulfilled demand in the city, and in view of the large number of pets, mainly dogs, cats and ferrets.
Barcelona becomes the first city in the Spanish state to launch a pet cremation service.
