Besides the quality of the projects presented, the call will take into account how well established they are, the experience of the local area where action is proposed, and the network of volunteers which organisations can demonstrate. Value will also be given to actions promoting coexistence between species and biodiversity.

The scope of the call is based around eleven geographical zones (the ten city districts and the Zona Franca), with interested organisations obliged to participate in at least two zones and present a project for each zone they wish to get funding for.

The different concepts for which subsidies are available are:

  • In relation to the sterilisation of cats
    • Sterilisations (veterinary invoices for surgical sterilisations)
    • Specific food to facilitate capture
    • Care relating to sterilisations (veterinary invoices)
    • Material for capture (cages)
  • Basic and urgent veterinary costs
    • Deparasitation
    • Vaccinations
    • Visits and surgery for processes which seriously threaten the health of the animal
  •  Care of colony environments and infrastructures
    • Food (pet food)
    • Cat houses
    • Materials for colonies: drinking water, feeders etc.

Applications can be made during the month after the call is published in the BOPD, which should be in the fourth week of March. In addition to this call, the coming days will also bring the general subsidy call for organisations with projects to promote animal welfare and protection initiatives, with 50,000 euros of funding available.

Barcelona has 638 feral cat colonies, with a total of 7,283 cats. There are currently 13 organisations on the subsidy programme for the control of feral cat colonies, operating programmes which receive municipal funding to control them.
