“On public transport, we take the necessary prevention measures. You act co-responsibly”. This is the starting premise for the new safety campaign launched by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM) across the whole public transport network.

The campaign seeks to highlight the measures which all public transport operators in the Barcelona metropolitan area have been taking for months, at the same time reminding users of the measures they must adopt and thanking them for doing so.

Joint responsibility between operating companies and users manages to keep the risk of infection to a minimum on public transport.

Safety is everybody’s responsibility

This goal is: to show that everybody’s safety is everybody’s responsibility. The measures adopted by operators do not have the same strength or effectiveness without the collaboration of users, and vice versa.

Because of this, the campaign covers the bulk of the measures that need to be adopted to guarantee safety on public transport, also drawing attention to the measures being taken by the public transport network, such as the disinfection of vehicles and stations.

All operators are already recognised by certifying companies as providing safe spaces or are in the process of being certified, guaranteeing that the disinfection protocol is being properly observed.

“We’re constantly renewing the air you breathe. Try to avoid speaking”

Another key measure for improving safety on public transport, particularly railways, is to guarantee the healthiness and quality of the air that users breathe.

In this respect, operating companies have strengthened their ventilation and air-renewal systems in recent months to the point where vehicles currently take between 2.5 and 7 minutes to renew their air completely, depending on the type of transport.

In parallel with this measure, the ATM reminds users that when we avoid
speaking, we avoid expelling droplets into the air and help minimise the risk of infection even further.

The campaign therefore also recommends travelling in silence on the whole public transport network: metro, trains, trams, urban and inter-urban buses.

Other campaign messages make reference to:
• the correct use of face masks at all times, meaning users do not remove them and do not eat or drink.
• avoidance or build-ups of people and, where possible, rush hours (between 6 am and 9 am).
• hand-washing before and after using public transport.
• not travelling if posing a potential infection risk (whether travelling when feeling unwell or doing so when in preventive quarantine).
