Tourist tax surcharge to rise to the maximum amount allowed by the by-law
Provisional approval has been given for the increase in the tourist tax surcharge, which will rise from the current 3,25 euros to the maximum permitted amount of 4 euros, for all types of establishments per person per night. The measure could generate an additional 20 million euros in revenue, consolidating tourist taxes as the third largest source of income for the City Council.
The increase in revenue, still to gain final approval, should increase the social return of tourism and fund ordinary services in the city such as cleaning, public lighting and transport. It will also help fund the Plan on Large Influx Areas (EGA) and part of the money generated will be used for projects that help draw fairs and congresses to the city.
Without this rise, the forecast is for this tax to generate 95 million euros in all in 2024, adding the 75 million forecast for the surcharge and the 20 million euros that correspond to the city from the Tax on Overnight Stays in Tourist Accommodation (IEET), which goes in equal parts to the City Council and the Government of Catalonia.
An amendment will be made to Tax By-law 2.2, which regulates the surcharge the city applies to the Tax on Overnight Stays in Tourist Accommodation and will be subjected to public scrutiny before being finally approved in September or October.
