Wild Cursive

In 2007, the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan made their first visit to the Grec Festival of Barcelona to perform Moon Water. The response was so enthusiastic that they are back this year with a new production, Wild Cursive. The title is a reference to Kuang Chao, literally “wild calligraphy”, considered the pinnacle in Chinese cursive aesthetics, radically freeing the characters from any set form and enabling them to create the most beautiful images to attain an almost-spiritual quality. The main stage elements in Wild Cursive are ink and rice paper, amid which the exquisite movements of the dancers appear to imitate those of expert calligraphers pursuing the art of writing or, perhaps, the liquid movement of the ink as it marks the paper.
