Did it really happen or is it a memory so real that it usurps reality itself? That is the question posed by the characters in this superb play, full of humour and irony, unique and enigmatic, by Harold Pinter, Nobel Prize-winner for Literature.
A conventional couple, Kate and Deeley, receive a visit from Anna, Kate’s friend and flatmate of twenty years ago. Over the course of a conversation that starts in an apparently light and pleasant tone, they remember things that may or may not have happened but that, by existing in the memory of the person who recounts them, end up forming part of reality. All three characters know each other well, but what, really, is the story that unites them? In this play, Pinter explores the labyrinths of memory as he masterfully portrays the ravages of time and the fragility of human relations. During her visit, the mysterious Anna will arouse ambiguous suspicion, jealousy and tension between the couple. No wonder that characters in this enthralling, hypnotic and disturbing piece, first performed in London in 1971, have been described, on occasion, as forming a “minimalist triangle”.
