In this epic spectacle, marking the first visit to Barcelona by Toneelgroep Amsterdam, theatre and television join forces to speak about political power in the words of Shakespeare. But don't stay in your seat: Ivo van Hove, a cult director who has innovated in the performing arts in Europe, invites you to wander around the theatre.
The stage resembles the Hall of Lost Steps at the European Parliament, but you will soon see that it is not so different from the palace of Julius Caesar or the court of a queen. For what we see are three Shakespearian Roman tragedies – Coriolanus, Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra – as one continuous performance, with rhythms and production values that borrow much from television. For once, you will be at the centre of the political arena. And not only that, but you will be able to move freely around the theatre and even go onto the stage in order to see things from a different angle. In this unusual mixture of theatre and everyday life, you will discover hidden facets of the political game in a thought-provoking, imaginative multimedia show that uses the latest technologies. Shakespeare speaks in the language of today, and this should come as no surprise, for Van Hove always brings a contemporary vision to his reworking of the theatrical repertoire, placing on stage the often perverse mechanisms that are at play in a modern society characterized by its individualism.
