An American singer who changed Nashville for Barcelona and an apprenticeship in flamenco fusion presents the results of a collaboration that has impressed around Europe for the last two years.
The singer Tori Sparks has lived in the Catalan capital since 2011, it is true, but she spends much of her time on the road, giving as many as two hundred shows a year in the US, Europe and Canada. However, this frantic touring activity has not prevented Sparks from establishing personal and professional ties with other musicians and creating such spectacular results as El mar. This album, which has been performed live all over Europe, is the result of her work with a flamenco fusion quartet more used to blending Andalusian rhythms and jazz sounds. It all began as an experiment, but over the months that the joint rehearsals continued, Tori Sparks’ music, based on blues, rock and folk, became perfectly fused with Calamento’s flamenco jazz style. In much the same way, the stagecraft and humour of the American singer-songwriter finds the perfect foil in the musical wisdom and experience of Calamento’s members, Xavi García, Pepe Camacho, El Rubio and Ramón Vagué. In this show, then, tracks sung in English and Spanish are performed with such talent and mastery that the project has won over even the purists, even the most demanding audiences.
