Circus Ronaldo

An encounter between father and son. A meeting between audiences and artists. Or the place where theatre, traditional circus arts and contemporary shows come together.

Maybe you have experienced the generation gap without even leaving home. Maybe you have already felt that you are becoming part of the past and that someone else is the face of the future... This is what Danny and Pepijn Ronaldo, father and son representing two generations of a dynasty rooted in the circus world since the 19th century, are experiencing. Johnny Ronaldo, the fifth generation of a family of circus artists, passed away in 2020, leaving his artistic legacy in the hands of Danny and David Ronaldo. They are the sixth generation of artists, but there are more. In this show, Danny Ronaldo and his son, Pepijn, will show audiences their love of games, music and circus, and use these shared passions to build bridges between generations. Danny represents the traditional circus arts and Pepijn, the way new generations are trying to connect this legacy to our world today. They say that seven is a sacred number. Thus, the Ronaldos, in their seventh generation, pay homage to their past and consolidate themselves as a company fully rooted in the present of the circus arts. On stage, the two characters support and help each other, while casting shadows in their struggle for the limelight.

David and Danny Ronaldo are familiar faces at the Grec Festival in Barcelona. In 2005 they brought La cuccina dell'arte, one of the company’s most acclaimed shows, to the festival. We saw Danny again at the 2017 Grec in a tent set up in the Plaça Margarida Xirgu, where he performed the solo Fidelis Fortibus, which won them a City of Barcelona Award the following year.  Emotion and tradition are key elements in the company’s shows, which use the tools of theatre and circus to reach audiences with a unique language.

Co-production: Théatre Firmin Gémier / La Piscine - Pôle national des arts du cirque (Châtenay-Malabry), Theater op de Markt - Dommelhof (Pelt), Miramiro (Ghent).

With the support of: Cultuurhuis de Warande (Turnhout), GC ‘t Blikveld (Bonheiden) and the Flemish Community.

This show is recommended for audiences aged 12 and above.
