Omar and his family flee from a war that has taken everything from them, and they set sail on a small boat with the desperate aim of finding a better life. However, a storm brings their escape to an end and the boy watches in terror as the sea swallows up his parents and all his fellow travellers.
Omar reaches the Italian coast as an orphan, a refugee, sent to an internment centre. Scared of being sent back to his country of origin, he escapes and hides in a walnut tree. The walnut tree is in the garden of Rossana Marinetti, a bitter, lonely lawyer who has turned all her neighbours against her, because of the continual eccentric lawsuits she files against her fellow citizens: one mixed up the colours of the recycling bags, another has a sewing machine that is too noisy and someone else left a shopping trolley badly parked in the supermarket...
But something happens when Marinetti meets Omar, because this fearsome lawyer decides to represent the newcomer in his extradition hearing and has an unusual argument up her sleeve: “This boy is a walnut”. An old law states that any fruit that falls from a tree belongs to the owner of the land where it falls, and so... Omar is not a boy, he is a walnut, and therefore he belongs to her.
A story of lonely people who are living a sad, grey life, neighbours who, when they meet Omar, don't see him as a refugee who has no place in our society, but rather as a ray of life that brings light to their sad existence.
