Senyoreta Júlia

They say that you can set a good story in any historical period. That is what has happened to Fröken Julie, a tragedy by the Swedish playwright August Strindberg about the brief affair between an upper-class lady and one of her servants at the turn of the twentieth century. Nearly a century later, the British playwright and scriptwriter Patrick Marber wrote After Miss Julie  and relocated its action on the night when the Labour Party won the general election in 1945. Miss Julie goes down to the servants’ kitchen to find John, the chauffeur, and unleashes a chain of events with far-reaching consequences for her as the country celebrates a political victory that opens up a new way forward.
