There is no better way of spending a summer night in the city than enjoying one of the open-air film sessions that are organized at Montjuïc Castle. This year, the programme includes three sessions designed specially with festivalgoers in mind, on a theme related to the Mediterranean. Lend an ear because there is music too!

30 June: Opening night of Sala Montjuïc
8.45 p.m. Concert: Renaldo & Clara
The musical project led by Clara Viñals has just released a second disc, Els afores, an album that is a master class in brilliant optimistic pop.
10 p.m. Short: Timecode, by Juanjo Giménez Peña, Spain, 2016
Two security guards working different shifts in the car park of an office block find a very original way of communicating with one another.
10.30 p.m. Film: La propera pell (The Next Skin), by Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campos, Spain, 2016
An adolescent returns to the village where he was born and is reunited with his mother and relatives after disappearing for eight years. The Catalan directors construct a story about memory, identity, doubt and fear that takes the form of a thriller.

26 July
Concert: Yacine & The Oriental Groove
A multicultural group led by Yacine, together with the Greek oud player Yannis Papaioannou. The rest of the band are Ertugrul, from Turkey, on saxophone, the Amazigh Algerian Massinissa Aït-Ahmed on bass and guitar, and Dani Clavera on drums. Music from here and everywhere, combining electronic, Algerian folk, Western pop, funk and melodies from Greece.
10 p.m. Short: Ringo, by Adrià Pagès, Spain, 2016
Grandmother Irene confesses that she is not grandmother Irene but … Ringo Starr! Is it a case of senile dementia or is she possessed by a spirit?
10.15 p.m. Film: Omar, by Hany Abu-Assad, Palestine, 2013
After directing Paradise Now and going to live in the USA for a while the Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad constructs a new story in today’s Palestine. The film is a well-worked thriller that uses a love story to explain the political paranoia typical of this territory. Uncertainty, conflict, tension, betrayal and love.

8.45 p.m. Concert: Gökhan Sürer Quartet
In 2013 the Turkish artist living in Barcelona Gökhan Sürer formed his own project, the Gökhan Sürer Quartet, which plays modern arrangements of songs from different cultures of Anatolia such as the Turkish, the Byzantine and the Armenian, with touches of different musical styles like jazz, funk and rock.
10 p.m. Short: Tiger, by Aina Clotet, Spain, 2016
A young couple about to have their first child lose their cat. And this circumstance will bring to light the differences between them.
10.15 p.m. Film: Mustang, by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, France, 2015
The opera prima of a Turkish-French director that talks about the patriarchy in Turkey, based on the story of some sisters in a rural family. Or the struggle between the Eastern and Western cultures that coexist in the same country, and between the power of religious traditions and modernity and the supposed freedom of Western culture.

A screening of The General (USA, 1926), by Buster Keaton, accompanied by live music played by a chamber ensemble made up of musicians from the El Vallès Symphony Orchestra and a jazz trio, conducted by Guerassim Voronkov.
Prior to the cine-concert, a string quartet from the VSO will play a set of film soundtracks.
