This autumn, the Barcelona International Jazz Festival arrives at the 50th edition and, to commemorate the event, the Grec Festival of Barcelona hosts five concerts: one, by guitarist Pat Metheny at Teatre Grec and four at the BARTS room.
When Robert Glasper debuted at the Barcelona International Jazz Festival in 2005, someone predicted that he would make history. And, indeed, Glasper has become one of the capital pieces of contemporary jazz, although at times he is a controversial figure. The pianist now returns with a unique sextet (they say this is his first and last tour) called R + R = NOW, a reference to Nina Simone and her credo: an artist must reflect his time, and respond to it, hence the two "R" of "R + R = NOW". With Terrace Martin on saxophones and keyboards, Christian Scott on trumpet, Derrick Hodge on bass, Justin Tyson on drums and Taylor McFerrin on vocals, keyboards and electronics, and Glasper on piano and keyboards, the band wants to tell the story from a community and restless point of view, open to all musical forms beyond labels.
