Born in France in the late-1940s, concrete music uses all kinds of sounds, recording, mixing and overlaying them to build up complex musical structures. To create Variations pour une porte et un soupir (1963), Pierre Henry recorded sounds from three sources: a mouth breathing in and out and sighing; doors creaking; and an instrument known as a flexatone, a metal sheet suspended in a wire frame that vibrates when struck against two wooden knobs. This performance, organised parallel to a new exhibition of works by Antoni Tàpies from the Fundació Antoni Tàpies Collection, highlights the Catalan artist’s interest in this type of music and this piece in particular, as the door is an essential image in his work.
