Fabulous beaches, a spectacular mountain range, turquoise waters, and a neatly laid table that will provide us with pleasures of every kind. If you’ve ever been there on holiday, you’ll no doubt think of Mallorca as a paradise. But as we all know, there's always someone who's been pushed out from every paradise, and there are those who haven't even had to take a bite of the apple to feel excluded from Eden, particularly in Mallorca. The unemployed, who haven't benefited from the island’s tourist industry, and who at the height of the crisis were queueing at food banks - these are the ones taking centre stage in a story that’s at the same time a theatrical road movie, thriller and rural tragicomedy set in landscapes you won’t find on the island’s picture postcards. The story is told by four characters, all played by the same actor: Joana, part femme fatale and part mother courage, who comes up with the plan; Sebastià, the chaplain who ends up being her victim; Pepe Joana’s husband who’s in charge of putting the plan into action, and Kevin, Joana and Pepe’s son, the one they hatched the whole plot for. The author, the actor and the characters blend together in a production that has been widely staged in Mallorca, and that won the Atapib 2020 prize for best playwriting and best actor, as well as the Ciutat de Palma 2022 prize for the performing arts. It is also a work that has been critically acclaimed as a successful meeting of the universes of Rafael Azcona, the Coen brothers, Luis Berlanga, and the Spanish picaresque novel.
The production was conceived and brought to the stage by Sergio Baos, born in Palma, Mallorca, in 1976. He holds a bachelor's degree in Hispanic Philology, but after training with stage personalities ranging from Leo Bassi to Alfredo Sanzol, has made theatre his life’s work. A theatre and television actor, he has also worked as a script-writer for IB3, the Balearic Islands television station, and written plays such as Horroris Causa, Domènech i Domènech, Plata no es, Creepy, Ivànov: ja no hi ha mosques and La classe.
