Nit i albada

One of the great Norwegian composers of our times, who inhabits a space between European and North American sounds, brings his piano to the Petit Palau and offers a peek at his well-known talent as an improviser.

The composer-in-residence at the Palau de la Música for the 2023-2024 season trained at prestigious institutions such as the Julliard School in New York, in addition to studying film scoring in Los Angeles. Currently one of the most performed symphonic and choral composers in the world (he has conducted the Phoenix Chorale), he is not only known as an artist but also as a piano player, especially as an improviser. We’ll have the chance to see this side of Gjeilo during Nit i albada [Night and Dawn] at the Barcelona Grec Festival. He has classical training, but admires Keith Jarret, whom he considers the best jazz pianist of all time. A composer of ethereal-sounding pieces (some even call them mystical), he draws on elements of polyphonic singing as well as jazz and minimalism.
