An international team of German, Spanish and Catalan actors, singers, musicians and artists create an innovative transnational musical theatre experience. On stage, a debate on the limits of freedom and identity in a globalised world.
Oficina per a una vida postidèntica was created between Barcelona and Berlin when two companies, 'pera de Butxaca i Nova Creació and Neuköllner Oper Berlin, joined forces. Taking as their starting point the debate on the limits of freedom in the contemporary world, the team of artists dreamed up an experimental musical theatre piece set in the office of a transnational company which operates according to mysterious rules. The employees in this office, seven freelances in a co-working space organised formally from above, do all they can to pursue their own personal research project in an atmosphere marked by the identity crises of a world becoming ever more virtual and globalised. The resulting work is an evening of music, poetry, comedy and philosophy directed by Matthias Rebstock, a specialist in post-dramatic musical theatre. The texts are by the German playwright Tilman Rammstedt and his Catalan counterpart Marc Rosich, whilst the music and video art are by another Catalan, Raquel García-Tomás, who lives in London. Taking these materials as their starting point, the cast asks where the self can be found in the whirl of contemporary life. And, from amidst all the confusion, emerges the music of Beethoven that, like an echo, distorted as its passes through the prism of García-Tomàs’s compositions, reminds us of a utopian humanism that can hardly find a place in today’s world. This production, premiered at the Grec, will also open in Berlin for a month after the summer.
