The Kompanyia Lliure and a young director and playwright who has already staged his idea of Shakespeare on several occasions tackle a black comedy in which gender confusion plays a major part.
Conceived as a piece of entertainment to end the Christmas festive season, Twelfth Night is considered to be one of Shakespeare’s most perfect comedies. Here Pau Carrió reinterprets it with his own codes. He has previously presented particularly innovative and acclaimed versions of the works of the English bard, including Victòria d'Enric V (based on Henry IV and Henry V and seen in the Grec 2014) or his own version of Hamlet, premiered in 2016. He now directs the story of two twins who are shipwrecked off the coast of Illyria, where the Duke of Orsino has his court. The girl, Viola, will pass herself off as a man and will begin working, with the name of Cesario, at the duke’s court. The mix-ups caused by these gender switches give rise to a story composed of excess, partying, confusion, forced separations, vengeance, mockery, ambiguity, tears of laughter and tears of sadness. These are experienced by characters who, as the director of the production himself says, "seek and do not find one another, caress and scratch one another".
It is the new challenge facing the young actors who over the next three years will form the Kompanyia Lliure and who here place themselves at the orders of Pau Carrió after having presented this season In memoriam (La quinta del biberó), Revolta de bruixes and Moby Dick, un viatge pel teatre.
