What is real and what is not? In three interlinked monologues, the characters in this play ask this question, revealing how altruism and egotism often go hand-in-hand.
Helping others can have unexpected consequences, especially when, no matter how good our intentions, we attempt to impose our own vision of the world. Molly Sweeney, who was born blind, is happy just the way she is, but her husband, Frank, would do anything to restore her vision. And Doctor Rice thinks he can help her, and in doing so regain the professional standing he lost long ago. The Irish playwright Bryan Friel takes inspiration from a real case described by the neurologist Oliver Sacks to create a monologue in three voices that is deeply rooted in Ireland’s story-telling traditions. This is an intimate, delicate and truly different play. This production is directed by Miquel Gorriz, who received the 2011 Quim Masó 2011 Prize for his staging of the work.
