Black Sun

The materialisation of a permanent lack of satisfaction in life, turned into dance: a journey to a melancholic landscape, a mechanism that leads to a vision of the world that swings back and forth between sheer pleasure and pain.

Melancholic solitude is like a black hole: you imagine, invent and fear it, but no one feels brave enough to approach it, for fear of falling into it without escape. Melancholy is a state, submerged and hidden, that marks our times. It is a type of lucidity that stays on the margins and in the periphery of the world. María Jurado, the creator and director of this choreography, takes us on a journey in this show through the cultural history of melancholy and depression, creating a space that offers not a solution but rather an opportunity for opening wounds and scars, putting them on the table and starting to question them.

Black Sun is the choreographic and dramatic creation of María Jurado, an artist born in Múrcia in 1996. She began her dance studies here in this city and ended up in 2021 at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona, where she graduated, specialising in Choreography. María trained with the intention of staging the risk and power that emerge from the constant unease of asking oneself questions. The choreographies she has produced so far are Singulatitana (2019), Metàfores nocturnes (2020) and Black Sun (2021), which won her the Institut del Teatre 2021-2022 dance award. Most of her pieces transform and stretch concepts, probing the possibilities of various formats and the use of multi-disciplinary approaches in experimental dance and performance.

She has worked with creators such as Mabel Olea, who she danced with in her latest piece, Japan, which premiered at SAT! Sant AndreuTeatre (2022). She also took part in the Paradiso 99 company’s production, Extremadamente rebeldes y peligrosas, and was part of the creative process in Cuqui Jerez’s latest work, Mágica y elástica.

The Institut del Teatre Dance Award is organised by the Barcelona Grec Festival, Mercat de les Flors, El Graner, Creation Centre, SAT! Espai Dansat, La Caldera les Corts, Barceloneta Community Centre, the Professional Dance Association of Catalonia (APdC) and Estruch de Sabadell. The jury that awarded this year's prize to María Jurado’s choreography highlighted it as a "daring and captivating stage production based around melancholy". The production received a financial reward to help develop the show we will see making its premiere at the Barcelona Grec Festival 2022.
