Marat/Sade

Written in 1963, Marat/Sade is a key work in contemporary drama whose action takes place at three different moments in time: 1793, when Charlotte Corday assassinated the revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat; 1808, when a group of inmates at a mental hospital staged an enactment of a crime, directed by the Marquis de Sade; and the present, when the real actors stage the play, even involving the audience. The attacks of the lunatics and the censorship imposed by the hospital director remind us constantly that we are watching a representation, a protest against power, in which Marat’s ideas as a champion of collectivism contrast with Sade’s deeply individualistic philosophy. Actors and actresses sing and dance, giving the production a musical air in which the burlesque and violence combine to provoke a powerful emotional impression on the spectator. This piece enable audiences to discover the work of one of Andalusian’s most prestigious theatre companies, which celebrated its thirtieth anniversary in 2013.
