Les véritables aventures de Don Quichotte de la Mancha

Philippe Soldevila, after the text by Miguel de Cervantes

Three companies, two from Quebec and one from Catalonia, explore the relationship between reality and fiction in a show for puppets and flesh-and-blood actors based on Miguel de Cervantes' most famous work.

Why, four hundred years after the death of its author, is Don Quixote still considered an extraordinarily modern novel? The answer, no doubt, is the fact that the work is set on the border between reality and fiction, between sanity and madness, between art and life. This show, created by the Quebec companies Sortie de Secours and Pupulus Mordicus and their Catalan counterparts Gataro, also ventures into similar territory in a multidisciplinary production that fuses languages and combines both puppets and real actors with audio-visual elements.

In it, Alonso Quijada once again becomes Don Quixote to defend his real adventures from fakers like Avellaneda. This is the ‘real’ part of a performance in which Cervantes and his character will show us just how ambiguous the relationship between fiction and life can be. The fictional part is performed by the puppets of the Maese Pedro company which will attempt to stage The Adventures of Don Quixote of La Mancha.

The whole work, then, is an interplay between real performance and the language of puppetry. The production was conceived at the International Performance Arts Meeting (IPAM), an event organised by the Grec Festival of Barcelona, thanks to the understanding that sprang up between Philippe Soldevila and Víctor lvaro, representing, respectively, the Quebec company Sortie de Sécours and Gataro (company in residence at the Almeria Teatre), who were later joined in the undertaking by Pupulus Mordicus, an experienced puppet theatre company, also from Quebec.
