Lucy Duran

Ethnomusicologist, creator and director of radio programmes on world music, music producer and more. Lucy Duran has promoted performances by the Trio Da Kali around the globe, but has also worked with a string of great musicians from various cultures.

The daughter of Spanish exiles, Lucy Duran is a resident professor in African music at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She directed and presented the BBC Radio 3 programmee World Routes, has made documentaries and, in particular, has worked as a music producer creating shows such as L’experiència barcelonina, where the Trio Da Kali share their Mande roots music with Barcelona’s 21st century music scene in what she calls “collaborative re-imaginations of musical heritage”.

In this lecture Duran speaks to us about her experience as a producer, perhaps offering us an insight in to the secret of the success of her work, which has led to discs which are today regarded as essential works. With her experience in the world of radio journalism, Duran speaks to us about world music, her experience producing discs, documenting and directing projects, as well as her work at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.
