Used to directing his own scripts, Joël Pommerat, one of the brightest stars in new French theatre, has rewritten the tale of Little Red Riding Hood to accentuate those aspects of the story that tell of a dangerous, mysterious, unpredictable natural and animal world that is, at the same time, beautiful and wondrous. The French director also focuses on fear and its reverse side, desire, as essential elements, not only in this story, but also in children’s lives in general. Though they are instilled with philosophical and existential readings, Pommerat’s productions are by no means over-intellectual, but offer rich rewards for spectators of all ages, who cannot fail to be drawn in by the mysterious atmospheres this director creates on stage.
